Angiomas are benign tumors derived from cells of the vascular or lymphatic vessel walls (endothelium) or derived from cells of the tissues surrounding these vessels. Basically, they are benign growths of blood vessels.
Angiomas are a frequent normal occurrence in people of all ages, but are occasionally an indicator of systemic problems, such as liver disease. They are not commonly associated with malignancy (cancer).
They can be treated, if desired, due to symptoms, or reasons of appearance. If the diagnosis is uncertain, they can be biopsied, but this is not usually needed. Treatment is often done with a vascular laser, such as the Candela VBeam pulsed dye laser, which we have in our office.
